On January 16, 2009, HHS adopted ICD-10-CM for all diagnosis coding and ICD-10-PCS for inpatient hospital procedure coding.  The implementation date for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS is October 1, 2013.  

Although ICD-10 is still several years away from implementation, it is not too early to begin clinical documentation improvement/gap analysis, coder clinical knowledge assessments, and overall coder clinical education. Listed below are some of the specific areas in which YES HIM Consulting, Inc. could assist you:
  1. Provide ICD-10 overview educational presentations to senior management, IT/IS management and staff, physicians, clinical department managers, financial department managers and staff, HIM managers and staff, etc.  
  2. Conduct a detailed assessment and gap analysis of HIM coding staff clinical knowledge base.
  3. Begin HIM coding staff detailed clinical education.
  4. Assess the need for a clinical documentation improvement program (i.e. medical record documentation review audits).

YES HIM Consulting, Inc., has developed online basic clinical knowledge assessments which include:

  • Online assessment of coding staff’s knowledge base in:
    • Basic Medical Terminology (60 questions)
    • Basic Anatomy &Physiology (75 questions - includes all body systems)
    • Basic Pathophysiology (75 questions - includes all body systems), and
    • Basic Pharmacology (60 questions)
  • Survey of coding staff on previous education/training.

Online/Webinar Coder Clinical Education:
We can provide comprehensive online and webinar coder clinical education to improve coder clinical knowledge geared towards ICD-10-CM / PCS. A total of seven 1-2 hour (10 CEU) webinars would be provided:
  • One (1) Medical Terminology webinar
  • Two (2) Anatomy & Physiology webinars
  • Three (3) Pathophysiology webinars
  • One (1) Pharmacology webinar

Online Intermediate Coder Clinical Knowledge Assessments:
We then re-assess your coding professionals’ clinical knowledge. After the initial basic assessments and coder clinical educational webinars, we would then re-evaluate their clinical knowledge in preparation for ICD-10-CM / PCS.   
  • Re-assessment of coding staff’s knowledge base to identify gaps in the areas of:
    • Intermediate Medical Terminology
    • Intermediate Anatomy & Physiology (includes all body systems)

“The transition to ICD-10-CM/PCS will ramp up in 2011, with part of the implementation focus shifting to initial training for coders. But before coders learn the new code sets, many will require refresher training on anatomy and physiology, says Anita Majerowicz, MS, RHIA, the director of clinical coding and reimbursement at AHIMA. With the October 2013 implementation date coming closer, this year marks the point when coders should start seeking A&P training, either through their employers, association training materials, or colleges."
