AMA Announces Administration Code for Third Dose of Pediatric Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine

AMA Announces Administration Code for Third Dose of Pediatric Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine

The American Medical Association (AMA) has issued a new code for administration of a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine for pediatric patients aged 5-11, 0073A.

The code for the Pfizer vaccine for pediatric patients, 91307, was introduced by the AMA in October 2021, along with the codes for administration of the first (0071A) and second (0072A) doses. The new administration code is effective immediately and was released in response to the FDA’s expansion of the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to allow a third primary series dose for certain immunocompromised children 5-11 years of age.

New Codes for COVID-19 Vaccines Fast Tracked Since 2020

Release of COVID-19 vaccine codes began in November 2020 with the addition of codes for the first Pfizer vaccine product and administration. There are currently 29 codes available for COVID-19 vaccines, which are all listed on the AMA website in the updated version of CPT’s Appendix Q.

The process for code development and release has been accelerated in response to the public health emergency. The AMA collaborates closely with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in these efforts. The CPT codes that clinically distinguish each vaccine and dose allow for better tracking, reporting and analysis.

Predictable Code Structure for Vaccines and Administration

From the beginning, AMA developed a new code structure for these vaccine and administration codes to allow the immediate addition of codes for potential new vaccine products and the administration of specific doses of the vaccine.

The vaccine product code is five characters. The first three are 913. The fourth and fifth character represent the specific vaccine. For example, 91307 is the code for the pediatric dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. The last two characters of the code represent this particular product.

The vaccine administration codes are also five characters and correlate to the vaccine product codes. The first character is 0, with the second and third character representing the specific vaccine product. The fourth character designates the dose being administered and the fifth character “A” indicates that this is an administration code.

Consequently, new code 0073A represents the administration of the third dose of the Pfizer pediatric dose vaccine. This predictable code structure allows for the addition of new codes for vaccine products and administration as they become available and approved for EUA by the FDA.
