AMA Releases Provisional CPT Codes for COVID-19 Booster Vaccines
AMA Releases Provisional CPT Codes for COVID-19 Booster Vaccines
Three new CPT codes for COVID boosters have been released by the AMA: one vaccine product code and two administration codes. The booster candidates are from products developed by Pfizer and Sanofi-GlaxoSmithKline. With the addition of these codes, a total of 35 CPT codes have been released for COVID-19 vaccine reporting. The release of the updates now will allow providers and systems to be ready for the potential authorization by the FDA.
The booster candidate from Pfizer, which is for use in children ages 5-11 who have completed a primary series of COVID-19 vaccines, received the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the FDA. The new code is for administration of the booster dose.
The CPT codes for the Sanofi-GSK candidate are provisional, and they will become effective if and when the FDA grants an EUA. The Sanofi-GSK booster candidate is for persons 18 years old or older who have completed a primary series of COVID-19 vaccines. There are new product and administration codes for this vaccine.
Below are the codes and long descriptions of the COVID vaccine CPT codes 2022:
