As a result of the COVID-19 PHE, many new HCPCS/CPT and ICD-10-CM/PCS codes have been developed for reporting of testing, treatment, vaccination and diagnoses. The following is a comprehensive overview of the code changes from March 2020 through February 2022.

The 2022 CPT code updates have been released, with the CPT code book available in late October or early November. Over 400 editorial changes are included in the 2022 edition, with 249 new codes, 63 deletions, and 93 revisions.

2022 IPPS Final Rule Released with Allowances Due to COVID-19 PHE, Including Extended NCTAP

In the 2022 IPPS Final Rule, the New COVID-19 Treatments Add-on Payment (NCTAP), due to expire when the PHE concluded, was extended through the end of the fiscal year in which the PHE ends.

FY 2022 ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting Now Available

The FY 2022 ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for coding and reporting have been posted on the CDC website (2021). Fiscal Year 2022 introduces several guideline revisions, updates, and changes, some of which relate to new codes being implemented October 1, 2021. One example is Post COVID-19 Condition code U09.9.
