CMS Releases FY 2022 ICD-10-PCS Code Updates File

CMS Releases FY 2022 ICD-10-PCS Code Updates File

The files for the 2022 ICD-10-PCS updates are now available (CMS, 2021). A total of 191 codes are new for FY 2022 with 107 deleted and 62 revised (CMS, 2021). The files include the Official ICD-10-PCS Coding Guidelines and the updated Code Tables and Index. Coders will need to start using these on October 1, 2021. CMS also included definitions, Body Part Key and Device Key, and Aggregation Table within these files.

In the Version Update Summary, CMS included an overall count of 2022 PCS code updates. CMS also listed code totals by section:

This summary also lists the guidelines that CMS has updated. This includes revisions to the Control guideline B3.7, the body part guideline B4.1c, a slight change to guideline B4.8 for Upper and Lower Intestinal Tract, and two revisions to the New Technology section guidelines E1.a and E1.b.

Furthermore, the 2022 Addendum File includes addenda for the Definitions and Index. For example, the dorsal root ganglion is now linked in the body part key and index to the spinal cord or the more specific body parts of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal cord. A valuable resource for reviewing the overall changes for FY 2022 is the tables addendum. This 50-page file includes all the code tables that have changes with FY2022 noted in the margin for each update.
