Monkeypox has become a hot topic in the medical community as cases of the rare viral disease continue to spread worldwide. The outbreak of the zoonotic disease has left medical coders wondering how to appropriately code diagnoses and treatments since monkeypox was rarely seen outside of Africa pre-2022.
The CDC continues to track the monkeypox outbreak and features a global outbreak map with current case counts on its website.
Infectious Disease Information
A variety of symptoms characterize monkeypox, including fever, headache, chills, aches, swollen lymph nodes, and exhaustion. One of the most notable symptoms is a skin rash that looks like blisters or pimples, lasting from two to four weeks.
Transmission of monkeypox occurs when there is direct contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids or skin rash. Additionally, prolonged face-to-face exposure to an infected person, as well as contact with contaminated bedding or cloth, can pass on the virus.
Monkeypox Treatments
The CDC recommends several antiviral smallpox drugs and vaccines to treat and prevent monkeypox. The CDC suggests tecovirimat (TPOXX), an antiviral, to lessen the severity of symptoms in immunocompromised individuals. The two FDA-licensed vaccines for immunization and prevention of monkeypox include ACAM2000 and JYNNEOS, which is also known as Imvamune or Imvanex.
