The History of COVID-19
COVID-19, or “Coronavirus Disease 2019,” is an infectious respiratory disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2. Symptoms range from mild to no symptoms, to severe symptoms and death (CDC, 2020). Historically, Coronaviruses commonly occur in humans and several species of animals, including cattle, cats, bats, and more (CDC).

How to Code COVID-19 Infections & Testing
Coders use the diagnosis code U07.1 to code confirmed COVID-19 cases. Cases that do not have a positive test result should assign a code explaining the reason for the encounter, such as Z20.828 (fever).
