New Monkeypox CPT Codes Released for Testing and Vaccination
The American Medical Association (AMA) has developed and released new monkeypox CPT codes from the regular schedule to address a public health concern and track and report monkeypox testing and vaccinations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is tracking over 17,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox in 69 non-endemic countries, territories, and areas that don’t normally report this condition. CDC encourages those who have been exposed to monkeypox and people who may be more likely to get monkeypox to get vaccinated.
According to CDC, those more likely to get monkeypox include people:
- Identified by public health officials as a contact of someone with monkeypox
- With sexual partners in the past two weeks diagnosed with monkeypox
- With multiple sexual partners in the past two weeks in an area with known monkeypox
- With jobs in which they may be exposed to orthopoxviruses such as:
- Laboratory workers performing testing or handling cultures or animals with orthopoxviruses
- Some designated healthcare or public health workers
The CDC website provides more details on the monkeypox disease, treatment, and vaccination.
