The 2023 CPT annual changes take effect on January 1, 2023. There are 393 CPT editorial changes, including 225 code additions, 75 deletions, and 93 revisions (AMA, 2022).

CPT Code Set Changes to Include New Procedures and Services
As medical procedures and technologies advance, the CPT code set evolves to include guidelines for reporting these technological developments. There are 10,969 such codes outlining those procedures and new technology applications in the 2023 CPT edition.
There are 15 code additions to report new technology in anterior abdominal hernia repair services. Additionally, the AMA added a new appendix to outline reporting artificial intelligence/augmented intelligence (AI) applications.

More Modifications to E/M Codes
In 2021, the AMA modified the Office Visit Services E/M codes. For 2023, those modifications expanded to include E/M codes for hospital inpatient and observation care services, consultations, ED services, nursing facility services, domiciliary care services, and prolonged services.
