Review the New CPT Codes for the Bivalent COVID-19 Omicron Boosters
Eight new codes were added to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) for the bivalent COVID-19 vaccine booster doses from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech (AMA, 2022). These updated boosters are adapted for the original coronavirus strain and the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron, all administered in a single dose.
Four of the new CPT codes (91312, 91313, 0124A, and 0134A) are effective immediately since the FDA has authorized them. Moderna’s booster (for those 18 years of age and older) and Pfizer-BioNTech’s booster (for those 12 years of age and older) have been approved. The other four CPT codes (91314, 91315, 0144A, and 0154A) will be effective on the condition that the FDA authorizes Moderna’s new booster for those 6 years through 11 years, and Pfizer-BioNTech’s new booster in those 5 years through 11 years.
CPT codes identify the type and dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and booster. The new product and administration codes assigned for bivalent COVID-19 vaccine boosters are:
Moderna bivalent booster – 18 years and older (Effective immediately)
