VA and Cerner agree on EHR – What’s next?

It took several months of delays, but finally the Veterans Affairs Department and Cerner have agreed on a new Electronic Health Record system (EHR) for the VA. This means that the VA will be using Cerner EHR, the same software as the Department of Defense. The project, estimated to cost $16 billion, will take about ten years to take full effect.

“The modernization of the VA’s health information technology infrastructure is one of the most critical initiatives for the future of VA healthcare,” wrote Reps. Ann McLane Kuster of New Hampshire, and Mark Takano, Julia Brownley and Jose Luis Correa, all of California.

Interoperability between the VA and Department of Defense’s Center EHR system could be a challenge. As HIM & Coding consultants, using several EHR systems, we know the challenges that this transition will present in the upcoming years. Dedicated program managers and a detailed transition plan should follow.
