Review Summary of FY 2023 ICD-10-CM Codes & Guidelines Updates

CMS has released the 2023 ICD-10-CM codes and guidelines. As a result, the 2023 ICD-10-CM codes are to be used for discharges from October 1, 2022, through September 30, 2023, and for patient encounters from October 1, 2022, through September 30, 2023. Additionally, the files are available at The National Center for Health Statistics or the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Select changes include:

  • I.B.14 – Add Underimmunization Status to list of exceptions requiring provider documentation
  • I.B.16 – New verbiage in Documentation of Complications of Care
  • I.C.1.a.2.a) – Hemolytic uremic syndrome associated with HIV
  • I.C.2a – Changes to admission/encounter for treatment of primary site for malignancy
  • I.C.2.t. – Secondary malignant neoplasm of lymphoid tissue – new guideline
  • Chapters 4 and 15 – Add new code Z79.85, Long-term use of injectable non-insulin antidiabetic drugs
  • I.C.5. d – Dementia – new guideline
  • I.C. 15.a.7 – Completed weeks of gestation – new guideline
  • I.C.15.q.4) – Hemorrhage following elective abortion – new guideline
  • I.C.21.c.10 – Add paragraph for Z71 pediatric to adult transition
  • I.C.21. 17 – Add information about the use of SDOH codes

  • Candidiasis of vulva and vagina

Chapter 3 – Diseases of the Blood and Blood-forming Organs (CMS)

  • Hemolytic-uremic syndrome
  • Von Willebrand disease
  • Non-immune heparin-induced thrombocytopenia

Chapter 4 – Endocrine, Nutritional and Metabolic diseases (CMS)

  • Short stature due to endocrine disorder
  • Acidosis

Chapter 5 – Mental, Behavioral and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (CMS)

  • Dementia

Chapter 6 – Diseases of the Nervous System (CMS)

  • Limb girdle muscular dystrophies
  • Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome [POTS]

Chapter 9 – Diseases of the Circulatory System (CMS)

  • Refractory angina pectoris
  • Malignant pericardial effusion in diseases classified elsewhere
  • Nonrheumatic mitral (valve) annulus calcification
  • Dissection of thoracic aorta
  • Thoracic aortic aneurysm

Chapter 10 – Diseases of the Respiratory System (CMS)

  • Transfusion-associated dyspnea (TAD)

Chapter 13 – Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue (CMS)

  • Lumbar and lumbosacral annulus fibrosis disc defects

Chapter 16 – Certain Conditions Originating in the Perinatal Period (CMS)

  • Primary sleep apnea of newborn

Chapter 17 – Congenital Malformations (CMS)

  • Atrial and atrioventricular septal defect

Chapter 19 – Injuries, Poisoning, and Certain other Consequences of External Causes (CMS)

  • Add codes for Intracranial Injury with Unknown Loss of Consciousness to all applicable codes in category S06, add new codes in subcategory S06.8A Primary blast injury of brain, not elsewhere classified
  • Poisoning by methamphetamines

Chapter 20 – External Causes of Morbidity (CMS)

  • Electric (assisted) bicycle injury codes in categories V20-V29

Chapter 21 – Factors Influencing Health Status and Contact with Health Services (CMS)

  • Various Z codes, including additional long-term use of drug codes, personal history of corrected conditions, and additional noncompliance codes
