Review Summary of FY 2023 ICD-10-CM Codes & Guidelines Updates
CMS has released the 2023 ICD-10-CM codes and guidelines. As a result, the 2023 ICD-10-CM codes are to be used for discharges from October 1, 2022, through September 30, 2023, and for patient encounters from October 1, 2022, through September 30, 2023. Additionally, the files are available at The National Center for Health Statistics or the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
2023 ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
Select changes include:
- I.B.14 – Add Underimmunization Status to list of exceptions requiring provider documentation
- I.B.16 – New verbiage in Documentation of Complications of Care
- I.C.1.a.2.a) – Hemolytic uremic syndrome associated with HIV
- I.C.2a – Changes to admission/encounter for treatment of primary site for malignancy
- I.C.2.t. – Secondary malignant neoplasm of lymphoid tissue – new guideline
- Chapters 4 and 15 – Add new code Z79.85, Long-term use of injectable non-insulin antidiabetic drugs
- I.C.5. d – Dementia – new guideline
- I.C. 15.a.7 – Completed weeks of gestation – new guideline
- I.C.15.q.4) – Hemorrhage following elective abortion – new guideline
- I.C.21.c.10 – Add paragraph for Z71 pediatric to adult transition
- I.C.21. 17 – Add information about the use of SDOH codes
