All ICD-10 Updates Ready for April 1: NCHS Releases the 2024 ICD 10 CM Diagnosis Codes
The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) released the April 1, 2024, ICD 10 CM diagnosis codes and files. The files include the updated ICD-10-CM Guidelines and Addenda for the Tabular List and Index.
As of 2022, April 1st has become a regular update along with the traditional October 1st changes. All files for the ICD-10-PCS and ICD-10-CM, as well as updates to the MS-DRG Classifications and Software, must be available by February 1st of a given year to allow a minimum of two months for system updates and education.
The ICD-10-PCS April 1, 2024, files were available in December 2023, with information on MS-DRG assignment for the 41 new ICD-10-PCS codes in the ICD-10 MS-DRGs Version 41.1, effective April 01, 2024. The ICD-10-PCS files also include six deleted and three revised codes, with a minor update in the Radiation Therapy guidelines.

The NCHS updates for ICD-10-CM, unlike those for ICD-10-PCS, do not include any new codes for implementation on April 1, 2024. The tabular addenda include changes to notes, for example, modifying Excludes 1 to Excludes 2 notes and updating code ranges. There are also clarifications included, such as the correction of an Excludes 2 note for chronic bronchiolitis and asthma with COPD from code J44.9 Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, unspecified, to code J44.89 Other specified chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. J44.89 was newly implemented in October 2023, and this corrected Excludes 2 note reflects this change.
Minimal guideline changes include additional codes to be used for sepsis due to postprocedural infection, change of the word “solely” to “chiefly” in the Chapter 21 aftercare guidelines (I.C.21.c.7)) for the exceptions of patients receiving antineoplastic therapy. This change now coincides with the same update to the guidelines appearing in chapter 2 (I.C.2.e.2)).
